Eichhornia crassipes major - Water hyacinth

>Eichhornia crassipes major image

Eichhornia is the most popular and widely sold pond plant in the UK. It is attractive, provides shelter for wildlife but more importantly it is excellent at removing nitrates and toxins from ponds, improving water quality, reducing algae and helping to keep the water clear. Although it is invasive in southern Europe, it is well known that it cannot survive, let alone be invasive in the UK due to the climate. Sadly the European Commission chose to ignore democracy and to ignore a vote by MEPs who opposed the list. Eichhornia was published in the first List of Invasive Alien Species of Union Concern. MEPs know the list is wrong and voted against it. It is also inappropriate for the UK and we trust DEFRA will rectify this as soon as possible post Brexit.

Under no circumstances should garden plants be disposed of in the wild. Even native plants placed in the wrong location cause environmental damage. It is essential to dispose of them correctly, either compost them or take them to your local refuse centre.
